Welcome to Tasty Guide to a Healthy Planet’s website and blog. This website is the launch pad for cool video episodes, opportunities for activism, tasty meals, and learning about people and ideas.
On this blog we’ll share ideas, learn from one another, and help get some positive changes going. We welcome your input. Tell us about things you’ve learned, about events and opportunities you think are important, or even a new dish you made last night with produce from your garden.
Over the past few years, while we’ve been getting this project going, more people across the country have at least heard about the differences between the two food systems that feed us.
The conventional system is far and away the larger one. This is the system that’s selling over-processed and unhealthy foods to us as “natural.” It’s contributing to dangerous die-offs of honeybees and causing the rapid disappearance of the Monarch Butterfly. It contaminates our bodies with antibiotic resistant germs and hundreds of man-made chemicals. And it distorts our economy and threatens this country’s food security, by squeezing farmers’ profits ever lower, artificially supporting commodity crops with taxpayer subsidies, while importing even cheaper, uninspected foods from overseas.
The other one we call the ethical food system. It’s based on knowledge, care and support, between the people who grow and prepare food and the people who buy it. This system is made of farmers, bakers, creameries and restaurant owners who care about the health and enjoyment of the people who eat their food, and about protecting the environment. Their partners in this system are the customers who support them, paying them fair wages for their work.
And here’s another, very important thing – this food is both tastier and healthier for us. It’s riper, more flavorful and nutritious, and made to be enjoyed. It’s not bred for its resilience to being shipped thousands of miles. It’s not raised in tightly packed pens, sleeping in its own manure. It’s not made to jack up corporate profits by seducing our taste buds with loads of sugar and salt.
Our main purpose in doing the Tasty Guide project is to show people how a healthier and fairer food system isn’t only possible, it’s actually close at hand. You literally start at home, with how you choose to spend your food dollars. The idea of making your community, and even the world better isn’t hippy-dippy talk. It’s in the food choices we make every day. And they can be tasty choices if we want them to be.
Soon we’re going to present you with our first video episodes, shot around our home base in the Northern Heartland – Wisconsin and Minnesota. We’ve met lots of interesting people who have been creating this healthy food system, who have been making it succeed and grow throughout their communities.
Let’s talk about how each of us is making changes that work in our lives. And let’s share some ways we can make our communities and our world healthier and fairer. Tasty Guide to a Healthy Planet is about how all of us can help create positive change. It starts at home, it starts with us, and together we can move the world.
